DIRECT SERVICE PROGRAM SHARE HOMELESS INTERVENTION PROGRAM

The SHARE Homeless Intervention Program, authorized by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks to prevent the displacement of individuals and families from their homes as a result of eviction or foreclosure, assist homeless individuals and families in securing permanent housing and provide a training and educational component to ensure self-sufficiency. The United Way of Southwest Virginia subcontracts with People, Inc. to serve the counties of Lee, Wise, Scott and the City of Norton, Virginia.

In order to be eligible for assistance through the SHARE Program, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Applicants in permanent housing must be in imminent danger of losing their home or apartment through foreclosure or eviction.
  2. Applicants in temporary housing must be in imminent danger of displacement.
  3. Applicants must be in a temporary financial crisis due to unavoidable circumstances, including but not limited to accident, illness, job layoff, loss of day care or transportation, etc. The applicant must have been self-sufficient prior to the crisis and the crisis must not be chronic.
  4. Applicants' total annual income can not exceed the HUD mandated lower income limits for the area.
  5. Applicants must have exhausted their own resources and all other sources of assistance.

If determined eligible, financial assistance shall be paid directly to the vendors (landlords, financial institutions, utility companies, etc.) on behalf of the applicant. Financial assistance shall be provided as follows:

1. Rental Assistance - provided in the form of a grant and may include up to nine (9) months of rental assistance.

2. Mortgage Assistance - provided in the form of a no interest loan, which may be deferred and may include up to nine (9) months of mortgage payments.

3. Security Deposit and Utility Deposit Assistance - provided in the form of a grant and shall not exceed 150% of the area's HUD established Fair Market Rents. This assistance may be combined with rental or mortgage assistance.
